Government gears up to send massive June Ag Survey to producers

Over the next several weeks, the National Agricultural Statistics Service will conduct the June Agricultural Survey by contacting over 90,000 producers across the nation to determine crop acreage and stock levels as of June 1, 2026.
NASS then publishes the data in a series of U.S. Department of Agriculture reports, including the annual Acreage and quarterly Grain Stocks reports on June 30, 2026. The data also contribute to NASS’s monthly and annual Crop Production reports, the annual Small Grains Summary, annual Farms and Land in Farms and Land Values reports, various livestock reports, including Cattle, Sheep and Goats, and Hogs and Pigs, and USDA’s monthly World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates.
“The June Agricultural Survey is one of the most significant and recognized surveys NASS conducts,” said Joseph L. Parsons, NASS administrator. “When producers take part, they help ensure that the nation’s agricultural reporting remains accurate, transparent, and free from speculation. Their responses directly support decisions made by farmers, ranchers, researchers, private industry, and policymakers who depend on trustworthy data.”
The survey will ask:
- Small Grains: Acres planted and acres to be harvested
- Row Crops: Acres planted and to be planted
- Forage Crops: Acres cut for dry hay
- Genetically Modified/Genetically Engineered Seed Use
- Storage Capacity and Grain in Storage
- Value of Sales
The NASS has acknowledged concerns from respondents in the past, who have been skeptical that prices go down every time a report like this comes out or that only the largest producers and companies benefit.
The NASS says that its reports “help to create a level playing field for everyone involved in agriculture,” particularly by helping producers make better decisions on their operations, better assessing export potential, and giving insights to universities, extension agents, and other entities.
Producers can respond to the June Agricultural Survey online at agcounts.usda.gov, by phone, or mail.
