Prairie Weather

There are a few scattered rains falling in northeastern Alberta  this morning as a low pressure system is forecast to move across the northern growing areas of Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Another system is expected to track across the north on the weekend with most of the precipitation falling north of the main growing areas. Total precipitation from the system will be less than 2 mm across the Prairies. Manitoba and parts of northeastern Saskatchewan will receive close to 5 mm of water equivalent precipitation over the next five days.

Temperatures are mild this morning across the Prairies with overnight lows solidly in the positive single digits. Highs today will be above the freezing mark with the mid teens expected in Alberta and Saskatchewan and Manitoba expecting highs in the upper single digits. Cooler temperatures are expected in the eastern Prairies tomorrow with highs dropping back below freezing. The west will remain extremely mild for this time of year with highs in the mid teens. Mild temperatures should prevail on the weekend with high temperatures mostly in the upper single digits.

The long term forecast is calling for continued migration of the ridge to the eastern Prairies during the third week of February. The ridge will bring warmer than normal temperatures to the eastern Prairies, while western areas will be closer to normal. The pattern should also encourage above normal precipitation for the western regions of the Prairies as the storm track is expected to sit over the region.
