Teen held without bail in horse stabbing case

The 17-year-old accused of stabbing three horses during the National Barrel Horse Association’s Las Vegas Super Show will remain in custody after a Clark County juvenile court hearing Thursday morning.

According to KTNV in Las Vegas, a local hearing master ruled June 4 that the teen should be held without bail, citing concerns that she poses a public safety risk. The suspect appeared in juvenile court four days after authorities say three horses were intentionally injured inside the South Point Equestrian Center barn area.

The incident occurred during the NBHA Super Show on May 30. Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officers responded around 2 a.m. after receiving reports of an injured horse. Investigators later determined that three horses had been wounded with what police described as a sharp object.

Police subsequently identified a teenage girl as a suspect, alleging she had access to the barn area and may have used a knife to injure the animals. Authorities later located the teen at a nearby hotel and took her into custody.

The suspect faces 12 counts of animal cruelty involving horses and three felony counts of destruction of property.

Earlier this week, Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson announced that prosecutors would seek to have the case transferred to adult court.

“These allegations involved deliberate acts of extreme cruelty against defenseless animals and have had a significant impact on the victims, the owners, and the broader equestrian community,” Wolfson said. “Animal abuse cases are taken extremely seriously by our office. Nevada law allows certain juvenile offenders to be prosecuted as adults when warranted by the seriousness of the conduct. We believe this case meets that standard.”

Thursday’s hearing focused only on custody status. The hearing master did not consider the prosecution’s request to certify the teen as an adult.

That decision is expected to be addressed during the suspect’s next court appearance, scheduled for July 8 at 10 a.m. Until then, she will remain in juvenile custody.

The case has drawn national attention throughout the equestrian community since the injuries occurred during one of barrel racing’s premier events. Following the incident, the National Barrel Horse Association said the individual involved was removed from the event and turned over to law enforcement. South Point Hotel and Casino also released a statement emphasizing that the safety and well-being of guests, participants, and equine athletes remains a top priority.

The three injured horses survived the attack. Updates on their recovery have continued to be closely followed by competitors and horse owners across the country.
